MCNA Insurance Company (“MCNA”) recently notified its customers of a data breach involving highly sensitive personal information of its dental/orthodontic care members of certain state Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Programs. On March 6, 2023, MCNA discovered that an unauthorized third-party gained access to certain systems containing the highly sensitive personal information of its members. MCNA engaged a forensic firm to investigate the data breach and assist in any possible remediation efforts. Through the investigation MCNA discovered that certain systems within its network had been infected with malicious code which allowed the unauthorized third-party access to remove copies of the highly sensitive personal information over a ten-day span, between February 26, 2023 and March 7, 2023.
The MCNA data breach notice letter you may have received, that was issued on May 26, 2023, indicated that Social Security numbers were included in the personal information disclosed as part of the data breach and that the data breach compromised roughly 8,923,662 individuals’ personal information.
MCNA reported that the following highly sensitive personal information was included in the data breach:
- Demographic information to identify and contact you, such as full name, date of birth, address, telephone number and email addresses;
- Social Security numbers;
- Driver’s license numbers or government issued identification numbers;
- Health insurance information such as name of plan/government payor, member/Medicaid/Medicare ID numbers, plan and/or group numbers; and
- Information regarding dental/orthodontic care.
