Steven Liening is a committed litigator willing to fight for his clients. Being wrapped up in a lawsuit can be stressful and intimidating and that’s why having a confident and knowledgeable attorney is essential. Before joining Hellmuth & Johnson, Steven worked as a public defender followed by experience working in commercial litigation for a midsize firm. Prior to that, Steven clerked for two years in Chancery Court in Memphis, Tennessee. He also externed for the Hon. Bernice Donald of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Pro bono work has been an important part of Steven’s work as he has served criminal defendants and tenants facing eviction.
Steven’s litigation practice has focused on construction disputes and real estate litigation. Steven has also worked on personal injury cases, defamation, and trust disputes.
Steven enjoys serving clients from diverse communities, as he lived abroad for several years and worked as an Arabic translator for the U.S. Army and speaks several other languages. Steven deployed to southern Afghanistan in 2010, participated in dozens of missions throughout the region, and coordinated a charitable drive to donate essential materials to local villagers. He understands that navigating the legal system presents different challenges for every client and that each client deserves service that is focused on individual needs.
Steven graduated from the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law of the University of Memphis, where he was awarded a full academic scholarship, served as a graduate research assistant, won the mock trial competition, and served on the executive moot court board. Steven also holds degrees in music and Arabic and has received numerous academic awards, stipends, scholarships, and grants in a variety of fields. Steven is an accomplished musician who has performed in venues throughout North America and Europe.
